The Story of a Courageous, Uncompromising African Woman

ANOTHER MAN'S GARDEN
Part of the Global Lens Film Series

Available on DVD beginning January 20

First Run Features proudly announces the release on DVD of Another Man’s Garden, a groundbreaking narrative about a young woman from Mozambique whose aspirations are in conflict with the typical opportunities afforded to women in her culture.  The film, which director João Luis Sol de Carvalho dedicates to “the courage of young women who continue to strive against the odds,” asks the universal question: what happens when an uncompromising woman refuses to conform to traditional gender roles?

In Mozambique it is sometimes said that sending girl to school is “like watering another man’s garden.” Sofia, a young woman studying to be a doctor, finds that her professor wants more from her than hard work. “Be careful,” warns Sofia’s mother, “The road is full of traps.”  An unwillingness to compromise her values – and potentially her health – may cost Sofia a place at the university, an irretrievable loss in a country with so few opportunities for women. Highlighting corruption and misogynist attitudes in a society devastated by the AIDS virus, this acclaimed feature debut brings to light the terrible struggle many African women face.

“Richly atmospheric and full of telling details which illuminate the barriers faced by women in Mozambique” (Museum of Modern Art), Another Man’s Garden is must-see viewing for advocates of women’s rights across the world.  Utterly authentic in tone and content, João Luis Sol de Carvalho’s “not to be missed” tale of defiance is truly “Africa through African’s eyes.” (Twin Cities Daily Planet)

João Luis Sol de Carvalho was born in Beira, Mozambique in 1953. He studied at the Conservatório Nacional de Cinema in Lisbon, and worked as a journalist, editor and photographer, and produced numerous documentaries and television programs. Sol de Carvalho is the founder and general manager of Promarte Production Company in Maputo. O Jardim do Outro Homem (Another Man’s Garden)
is his first feature film.

Traditional and Modern Argentina COLLIDE in…

ON EACH SIDE
Part of the Global Lens Film Series

Available on DVD beginning January 20

Amply attesting to the vitality of new Argentine cinema” (Variety), the feature length drama On Each Side follows the interconnected lives of several people who are affected by the building of the Rosario-Victoria Bridge – a gargantuan, modern undertaking that links two Argentine cities.  As the bridge rises, director Hugo Grosso introduces characters from both modern and traditional Argentina, bringing into stark relief the connections and conflicts between generations.

In On Each Side the bridge not only traverses a river but spans the past and the future.  The viewer meets various characters: a photographer who has discovered a key to his past; a thief with a curvaceous partner in crime; two sisters who experience a sexual re-awakening after they take on a boarder; a German bridge engineer who enjoys clandestine trysts with a transvestite chanteuse across the river; and a pair of adventurous boys who, as construction progresses, grow into young men.  Building the bridge takes years, and in the process lives on both sides of the river are transformed.

Atmospheric” and “unexpected,” On Each Side is a masterful narrative juggling act. Grosso’s “documentarian’s eye for detail” highlights his characters’ idiosyncrasies, while lending an entirely unique tonality to a story which, “deftly (blends) melodrama and farce.” (Variety)

Hugo Grosso, born in Argentina in 1955, created a school for filmmaking and TV in Rosario, where he has taught and served as headmaster; he subsequently formed the Festival Latinoamericano de Video de Rosario. Grosso has made several documentaries including Donde Comienza el Camino (Where the Road Begins, 2005).  On Each Side is his feature film debut.
