First Run Features Acquires Mushroom Hunting Doc
The Last Season

First Run Features has acquired the U.S. rights to the mushroom hunting documentary The Last Season. Directed by Sara Dosa and produced by Josh Penn (Beasts of the Southern Wild, The Great Invisible), The Last Season tells the story of two war veterans – an American sniper who fought in the Vietnam War and a Cambodian Khmer Freedom Fighter who battled the Khmer Rouge – whose lives intersect in the bustling world of Oregon’s wild mushroom hunting trade. While searching for the elusive matsutake mushroom, the two men instead form an unexpected friendship and a means to heal the scarring wounds of war.

Just nominated for the Film Independent Spirit Awards’ Truer than Fiction award, The Last Season made its World Premiere at the 2014 San Francisco International Film Festival, where it took home the Golden Gate Award for Best Bay Area Documentary. The film made its International Premiere at Hot Docs and has since toured the festival circuit. In addition to a theatrical and digital release by First Run Features The Last Season will have a 2015 national broadcast on PBS.

“We’re excited for the opportunity to work with Sara and Josh on the release of their evocative, resonant documentary,” said Marc Mauceri, Vice President of First Run Features. “Our entire staff feels strongly that The Last Season has a unique quality that discerning audiences will enjoy discovering."

"Elegiac, and insightful as to the traumatizing effects of war on men from different backgrounds..."
- Michael Guillen, The Evening Class

"[The Last Season] hunts down and captures the essence of the modern documentary, slowly and surreptitiously seducing you into the ever-enlarging story languishing beneath the surface...an excellent testament to the benefits of believing in the New West."
- Doniphan Blair, Cinesource Magazine

"Sumptuous…Moving…A richly textured story of cultural coagulation in which men are united by violence, global commerce, and finally, respect – for each other and the forest which soothes and supports them all." - Jordan Smith, Ioncinema

A lyrical ode to the wonders of love and nature, even amid inevitable change."
- David Lewis, San Francisco Chronicle

Director Sara Dosa is available for interviews.
