Enter the imaginative world of Lewis Carroll in these animated adaptations
of the Alice in Wonderland author's classic Nonsense Poems, The Hunting of the
Snark and Jabberwocky.
In The Hunting of the Snark, a high-masted ship sets sail to roam the seas
looking for a Snark. In this colorful adventure, the Butcher pursues the Beaver;
the Broker takes count, while the Barrister preserves order; the Bellman leads
them over the edge; and the Baker...the Baker finds the Snark!
Carroll wrote the first stanza of Jabberwocky in a magazine he created to entertain
his family while he was still living at home in Croft. He later confessed, "I'm
afraid I can't explain it." The program ends with Lewis Carroll: Glimmers
of a Life, in which Sporn offers an entertainingly concise, animated history
of Carroll's life and writing career.
A century has passed, and people have not yet tired of trying to explain these
two poems. There are whole books devoted to their interpretation. We will probably
never know completely what Lewis Carroll intended, but that shouldn't matter;
as he himself pointed out, "our words mean more than we mean them to mean."
