Synopsis
From its humble origins 120 years ago to present day, Boston immerses the viewer into the wondrous kaleidoscope of the oldest annually contested marathon in the world. Evolving from a workingman's challenge to welcoming foreign athletes and eventually women, the iconic race paved the way for the modern marathon and mass participatory sports. Narrated by Matt Damon, Boston features many of running's greatest champions including Shalane Flanagan, Meb Keflezighi, Bill Rodgers, Frank Shorter and Joan Benoit Samuelson. Watch the Trailer Reviews "Smartly produced and remarkably well-researched. A rejuvenating experience...for a casual Marathon observer (like myself), the most rewarding aspect is the outrageous abundance of human interest stories it piles up across a full century-plus history of the race. The filmmakers appear to have rounded up most if not all of the living winners...the section on the women runners is absurdly satisfying. We learn about the quiddities of the route that make the modern world's oldest marathon its most troublesome even for experienced runners, and we about the strategies that make it conquerable." Ty Burr, Boston Globe "A worthy tribute bound to illuminate and inspire." - Variety "The long, rich and, more recently, tragic history of the marathon is traced with involving detail and heart in Jon Dunham's inspiring documentary." - Los Angeles Times "Emotional and thrilling, without gloss or cliche." - Village Voice Disc Features Two bonus films:
