Synopsis

New Ways: Music from the Documentary I Dream of Wires (2CD Deluxe Edition)
A soundtrack by Solvent

Before he came on board as producer, Solvent's Jason Amm was commissioned by I Dream of Wires' director to create an original soundtrack for the film. Solvent took on the soundtrack LP as a challenge, determined to expand his synthesis palette with the new possibilities of modular but also with a firm focus on completing an engaging body of work that would stand on its own outside of the film. The result is "New Ways," heard prominently throughout the film, and created, programmed and composed entirely on modular synthesizer systems.

This Deluxe Edition of the album features all-new artwork and contains a full 74-minute CD of additional bonus material, including previously unreleased Solvent music from the film and new remixes from artists who were interviewed for the film, such as Wrangler (featuring Cabaret Voltaire’s Stephen Mallinder), Chris Carter (Throbbing Gristle, Chris & Cosey), Orphx, Martial Canterel, and more.

I Dream of Wires (DVD)
A film by Robert Fantinatto & Jason Amm

Exploring the history of the modular synthesizer, I Dream of Wires reveals how innovators like Robert Moog developed the first room-sized prototypes. It shows the meteoric rise in popularity of the synthesizer – later made obsolete by a flood of cheap knockoffs. And it tracks the phenomenal resurgence of the high-end modular synthesizers being used today by a whole new generation of musicians, many of them at the forefront of EDM (electronic dance music).

Musicians including Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Gary Numan, Carl Craig, Morton Subotnick and Vince Clarke (Erasure) talk about their passion for the modular synthesizer, and how it influences their music, while new EDM artists including Clark, James Holden and Factory Floor discuss why they've embraced its sound and physicality. Innovative companies including Modcan and Doepfer reveal how they planted the seeds that have now grown into a major cottage industry.
